La scène, contrairement aux apparences, n’a pas été peinte aux Folies Bergère, mais a été recréée dans son atelier. Suzon, la jeune femme servant de modèle, est une véritable employée de ce célèbre café parisien. Le 20 Avril 1883 la jambe gauche de Manet fut amputée et il a décéda le 30 Avril 1883 à Paris. Il fut inhumé au le cimetière de Passy.

Since the late 1870s, Édouard Manet suffered from syphilis. Plagued by the disease, he realized before his death one of his last major works entitled “Un bar aux Folies Bergère”. The scene, contrary to appearances, was not painted at the Folies Bergère, but was recreated in his studio. Suzon, the young woman serving as a model, is a real employee of this famous Parisian cafe. On the 20th of April 1883 Manet’s left leg was amputated and he died ten days later on April 30th in Paris. He was buried in the cemetery at Passy.
